The Day of Amazing Days.

Sup, [insert preferable slang term for 'friends' or 'sexual partners' here]!
I figured a week is long enough to put off writing this post, as I am now able to talk about the day without going into an excitement-induced coma or a serious shaking fit. "But Grace, what on earth are you talking about? What day is this you speak of?!" I hear you shout, like a crowd of impatient, yet very well spoken children. This day was the almighty Record Store Day!
I woke up and ate what felt like three bowls of Coco Pops, when it actually amounted to about 3 Coco Pops [I can't eat when I'm excited or nervous, particularly in the mornings]. I decided to celebrate Record Store Day with my Dad, because he was the only person who would fully appreciate the experience apart from the person I had planned to go with [he ditched me for the Cotswolds, whey!], so I got on the tube at Hatton Cross station until we reached... some place I can't remember the name of. But anyway, we got on a different tube and took the tube to Liverpool Street - that really excited me, because it's on the Monopoly board and I've never been there before.
We then proceeded to try and work out the route to Rough Trade East, which was certainly easier said than done. However, with my father's knowledge of the main streets of London from being a bus driver for years, and my awareness of hipsters who look like they'd shop at Rough Trade, we managed to find an Indian guy in a Dinosaur Jr. t-shirt and follow him some of the way. Then he disappeared, and as I squinted against the sun and searched for him, resenting my height, or lackthereof, a man with a pink folder shouted, "Are you looking for a guy with a pink folder?". Apparently, I was staring right at him and his congregation of nerds, and though I half wished I could stay with them [I felt like I really fit the bill - glasses and an air of quirkiness] I had to say "no" and carry on my voyage. It was actually really easy to find it then, because my Dad had a somewhat frightening knowledge of the backstreets of the Brick Lane area. As we neared the store, which was obvious as the streets were brimming with hipsters and music snobs, it suddenly dawned on me where I was. I'd made it to Rough Trade East.
Unfortunately, there was a queue, but my Dad was happy to wait with me. We were standing in that queue for about 30 seconds, shuffling along instinctively with the ebb and flow of vinyl-lovers, when he walked past: Alex Day. I saw him from the corner of my eye, thinking "he looks an awful lot like Alex Day, and look! His friend has his hair dyed blue like Tom Milsom!" I then took a double take and muttered, "That's... Alex Day. Oh... oh my God. Alex Day." My Dad, being awesome, pushed me out of the queue, saying "I'll wait for you!" I ran towards them, unaware of anything else around me, and tapped Alex on the shoulder. He turned around and I say, "Hi!", shocked that I could squeeze any sound out of my shaking vocal chords, to which he replied "Hello!" in that Alex Day way I adore so much. All I could think to say was "You sound the same!" *FACEPALM*, before explaining that I had only been discussing my favourite member of Chameleon Circuit with a friend the day before. "My friends all love Charlie, but you're my favourite," I told him. "Your favourite should be Charlie too! He makes good videos," he modestly replied, to which I imagine I made a noise that would have sounded something like a quiet "Pffffffffffsdasfhsft" and assuring him, "YOU'RE my favourite." Tom then cut in, stating that although Alex wasn't his favourite member of Chameleon Circuit, he was his favourite member of Sons of Admirals [don't worry if you don't get the joke, it's a YouTube thing ;D], to which I felt I had to reply with, "If it's any consolation, Tom, you're my second-favourite member of Sons of Admirals!" Clearly, he didn't feel it was any consolation. Alex and Tom were just about to leave when I remembered I had my camcorder [WIN!], so I asked if I could take a picture of Alex, which he modestly accepted. I took the picture, my hands, knees and most other limbs shaking furiously, and got a hug from Alex [UNDERSTAND MY EXCITEMENT, YES?!]. Then they left, and that was the end of the greatest moment of my life. And there he is, in all his neriglory.
I returned to my Dad, who had edged much closer to the entrance of Rough Trade East, threw my arms in the air and matter-of-factly stated, "I am a God." We then entered the store and who did I see? None other than Laura Snapes, a writer at NME, who just so happened to act as my mentor during my work experience week [when I wasn't saying embarrassing things to Jaimie Hodgson, that is]. We exchanged that awkward 'acknowledging each other without saying hi' smile, and I continued in the shop. It was honestly one of the most incredible places I've ever been, the bustling atmosphere only adding to my excitement. I was given £15, so I bought Metronomy's 'The English Riviera' on disc and The Wombats' single 'Anti-D/Valentine', as it was the last copy of the limited stock of 1000 which were released specifically for Record Store Day, plus I have a sort of inside joke with the friend who couldn't make it that day about the fact that Murph sings, "It's hard to smile when you're as flattened as a panc-c-cake", thus ruining the mood of the whole song. I also managed to grab a bunch of flyers, an album sampler by a band I'd never heard of called Hest and a Rough Trade paper cup, all for free. I love free stuff.
By the time we'd left the shop, it was only midday, so my dad suggested [in his terribly embarrassing Ali G impersonation voice] "We've been to da Eeeeast-side, so why not go to da Weeeest-side?" And so we did. We got on the tube to Notting Hill Gate and walked along Portobello Road, stopping at a fish and chip shop for lunch, where I had chips and my dad had the local delicacy: Jamaican patty. Once we had finished gorging ourselves on greasy food, we walked over to Rough Trade West, just in time to see the 3 o'clock performance: Pete & The Pirates, who saw a glimmer of fame in 2008 with their song 'Mr. Understanding'.
They were playing outside Rough Trade West, because the shop itself is miniscule, and were incredibly impressive. By the end of their "gig", there were so many people watching that they were obstructing the road, and so the police had to move them. Afterwards, my Dad and I approached them, having a nice little chat I even got a picture with them, in which I look awfully excited.
Overall, I'd say that Record Store Day was a pretty successful day for me. Actually, no, I wouldn't. I would say that Saturday 16th April 2011 was, if not the greatest day of my life, certainly in the top 3.

Here's an awesome picture:

German Day, followed by Record Store Day!

It's Friday, Friday, comin' into school on Friday. Everybody's lookin' forward to the coursework, coursework.
It's Friday, Friday, doin' German on Friday. Everybody's lookin' forward to the coursework.
...I think that's enough. Strange situation actually, sitting in the car with my dad, singing 'Friday'.
But ANYWAY, that little rendition was an ode to the German coursework and revision I spent all day doing. During my holidays. AT SCHOOL. I had to go to school to do a piece of writing... really?
It was actually really odd, more than anything. Apparently today was a serious school-cleaning day, because the whole place stank of bleach - And I'm obviously familiar with that smell, being a woman. I walked past one of the cleaners scrubbing a wall... it seemed like a pretty clear "look like I'm doing something while a stranger walks past" move really but if not, fair enough, each to their own I guess.
The worst thing was that I finished my writing piece half an hour early, so she just let me leave early for lunch. I immediately thought "I HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD!" and walked into Slough, thinking I would have enough time to read a chapter of the book I'm currently reading, before walking to Sainsbury's to meet the others. Rookie Mistake. I walked to Slough and then realised I would just have to walk to Sainsbury's straight from the town centre, or else I'd probably miss them. Silly Catgrace!

Yeah, so that was a fun day... or something, but do you know what day will be even more fun? TOMORROW. Do you know why? IT'S RECORD STORE DAY. I plan on hopefully going to one of the Rough Trade stores in London and experiencing the beauty of vinyl with an abundance of other young music snobs, like me. I want to go to Rough Trade East and see Wild Beasts perform, but my Dad looks more set on going to Rough Trade West, which seems to be absolutely miniscule. Never mind, I'm not gonna be fussy - I need money for a souvenir, and who else am I going to get it from?

On a final note, I made a mixtape for my friend [the same friend who insists they are mentioned in every single post I make] on Tuesday, and I think it was the best mixtape I've ever made - I suppose I could be deemed as slightly biased though, having made a "this is all music I like at the moment" mixtape. In return, I got a pretty damn good mixtape, except I discovered the true horror of Dubstep Bieber. Please never let me be put through that again.

So here's a picture I drew, BYE.

...Lenten Sports?

Unlike every other school in the south of Britain, who have already begun their Easter Holidays, my school are still going until tomorrow. However, instead of having a couple of useful, proper school days, I guess they tried to make up for it by attempting to reignite our spirits with the 3rd annual Lenten Sports, a day which consists of "old school" sporting events (egg and spoon race, sack race, three-legged race and the like..), during lunchtime.
In all fairness, it went down rather well - my team came 2nd in the sack race and 1st in the 'mysterious' team game, plus I got to dust off the old Super Mario hat and moustache - but I had a couple of qualms with the day:
Firstly, what in the world does any of this have to do with Lent? Fair enough the money made from the day went to charity, but really? Egg & Spoon race for God? It didn't make an awful lot of sense the first time around, and it still doesn't make sense now. The strange things Catholic schools come up with, eh?
Secondly, we were given strict rules as to what we had to wear for the day. Personally, I would have been happy to wear my school uniform throughout lessons and simply change into my P.E kit when the time came for us to embarrass ourselves. Instead, we were instructed that we had to wear either our P.E shorts or any tracksuit bottoms, but if we were to wear leggings we must wear P.E shorts over them. INSANELY PATHETIC. Like, our deputy head, Mr Cornell (or Corn Dog, if you'd rather), kept telling people off for wearing leggings when clearly he was fighting a losing battle, as there were swarms of girls in leggings who didn't want to look any more stupid than they already had by doing the wheelbarrow race. Face it, Corn Dog, nobody listens to you. Ever.

To be fair it went better than I had expected, so kudos to the organisers of the day. It always helps when you have God on your side, doesn't it? He clearly summoned the sun for us, cos it was boiling during the events, but was raining by 4.30.

Anyway, I'll write again soon. Here's the picture I should have drawn last time:
Night, guys.

THE MARCH PLAYLIST.

Drumroll please, guys! Or not... that's cool too.
Yeah, so after careful consideration, compilation and... something else beginning with 'c', I have finished my March Playlist. Here goes:

1/. 'I Follow Rivers' - Lykke Li.
It's not uncommon for artists to make reappearances on my monthly mixtapes, because I usually become obsessed with bands for a couple months and then forget about them. Lykke Li's an example of this, but this song is completely different to 'Get Some'. It's upbeat and catchy but doesn't include the word 'prostitute', for example.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZYbEL06lEU

2/. 'Anti-D' - The Wombats.
I love The Wombats so much, and this song reminds me why. It's so sad, but hopeful, and I just want to give everyone I see a cuddle after I hear it. On a slightly related note, here's a funny story: I did my work experience with NME, the music magazine, in September and it was, unsurprisingly, the most amazing thing I've ever done. The last job I was asked to do was transcribe an interview with The Wombats, and I was asked by NME's beautiful new music editor, Jaimie Hodgson. It was about 3 when I started and by 4.30, the end of the day and my work experience week, I was still only halfway done. So I had to shuffle over to one of the most gorgeous men I've ever seen in real life, give him back his Blackberry, and explain the situation. You could tell that he was a little disappointed, but he said it was fine. Earlier in the week, I was asked to write a review of a single, which would then be given to one of the NME staff, and guess who mine was? Yeah, I had to shuffle back to him and ask him what he thought, but instead of acknowledging him in a normal way, I said "long time, no see". He wasn't impressed, and those words have haunted me ever since. God, I'm an embarrassment.

3/. 'Young Parisians' - Adam & The Ants.
I got the Adam & The Ants Greatest Hits album in March, having only heard about 5 songs by Adam & The Ants. One song that jumped out at me on the album was this one, because it's so lyrically basic, yet hilarious. My favourite bit: "Allo!" It gets me every time :']
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ybRTNl1JJk

4/. 'Shell Games' - Bright Eyes.
I've been a fan of Bright Eyes since I heard 'First Day Of My Life', so when I heard that they were releasing a new album I nearly cried. I got this song as a free download, actually, but I bought the album anyway. It's really good, and they're actually not emo at all, so there.
Just a little aside comment: This is the first time I've seen the video, and Conor Oberst is still FIT. You're welcome for this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6MnpD5_4GI

5/. 'Us' - Regina Spektor.
I watched '500 Days Of Summer' in December. I expected it to be amazing and to fall in love with it like I did with 'Juno'. I didn't. However I really liked the soundtrack, so I stole it from my sister. This song is from the film, but I already adored Regina Spektor. Her songs are like little emotionscapes [I think I just made up that word...] By this, I mean that they span from one emotion to a completely different one: in 'Us', it starts off happy but by the end it's all sad and super emotional and kinda just makes me want to cry.

6/. 'New Ceremony' - Dry The River.
This song is GORGEOUS. I just love his voice and the background harmonies and the simple guitar and then the beautiful violin and... yeah, I love this song. I heard it at the end of February and really liked it. Not long after, various friends of mine went to see Two Door Cinema Club and guess who was supporting? Yep, Dry The River. Apparently, they sound exactly the same live as they do on the single. Of course I'm not jealous...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNEq1dKU8dY

7/. 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' - The Smiths.
Remember my brainworms post? Yeah, this brainworm stuck all month and I didn't mind one bit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfkvPnjb9hs

8/. 'Still Here' - Brother.
"Now, where do I recognise that name? Brother. Broooother. Bro-ther. OH, they're that band from Slough!" I've heard so many people say that before. I really like Brother and, I'll admit, at first I did only listen to them because they're from Slough, but they're a legit band. Like, they remind me a little of Oasis, except... good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAUeW6y6aHg

9/. 'Friday' - Rebecca Black.
COMMON SCENARIO #1: "Hey, Bob, when's the Biology homework due?" "FRIDAY, FRIDAY, GETTIN' DOWN ON FRIDAY!" COMMON SCENARIO #2: "Yo, Jerry, what's the plan for this weekend?" "PARTYIN', PARTYIN', YEAH! FUN, FUN, FUN. LOOKIN' FORWARD TO THE WEEK-END." COMMON SCENARIO #3: "Excuse me, Sir, what's the date?" "YESTERDAY WAS THURSDAY, THURSDAY. TODAY IT IS FRIDAY, FRIDAY... TOMORROW IS SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY COMES AFTER-WAAARDS." "Cheers, Sir." Need I say more? You all know this song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0

10/. 'Where Is My Mind' - Pixies.
I watched 'Fight Club' in March and I reeeeeeeeeeeally liked it. This is the song that plays in the end credits and although I already loved this song, hearing it at that point just clarified its amazingness to me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DDZEdkoaY4

11/. 'Metabolism' - The Strokes.
I haven't got an awful lot to say about this, because I couldn't actually tell you anything about this song. I've listened to the new album by The Strokes once, and this song jumped out a little more than the others. You may be able to tell that I wasn't overly impressed by 'Angles' at first listen. Meh, never mind, I'm sure I'll give the song a listen now.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPMOEF-asbw

12/. 'Crazy For You' - Best Coast.
Best Coast are just so cute! I aspire to one day be as in love with someone as Bethany Cosentino is with whoever she was with when she wrote this album. "I'm always waiting by the phone, can't wait for you to get home. I'm always crazy when I miss you, I'm always lazy when I miss you." God, the adorabubbles are foaming over!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzz8SojS3D8

13/. 'She Wants' - Metronomy.
If you like embarrassing, yet irresistible electro-pop attempts, you'd have loved Metronomy, circa 2008. But Metronomy have grown up now, with their serious songs about serious stuff! They're big boys and now one of the four is black and another one's a girl - how things change! Their music was pretty good then, and is really good now.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntVV3dTo-qw

14/. 'To Kayley, Who Is Sad' - Alex Day & Tom Milsom.
"HAHAHAHA-HAHA! Your card got stolen again! Your country's stupid and so are you! HAHAHAHA-HAHA!" It's a YouTube thing, and here's a brief synopsis: owlssayhoot [Kayley] had her credit card stolen, so nerimon [Alex Day] and hexachordal [Tom Milsom] decided to, uh, cheer her up with a song they wrote.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yccM6dAnsho

15/. 'Blood Bank' - Bon Iver.
It's kinda spooky and atmospheric, but only consists of guitar and harmonies. Maybe it's because this Canadian singer recorded it in his shed in a forest.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=774mOmdKtZM

16/. 'You Make My Dreams' - Hall & Oates.
Another '500 Days Of Summer' song! This was the only bit of the film that I really liked, the little dance routine that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has after he meets Zooey Deschanel. This song reminds me of a road trip my brother and I took with my dad, and how happy we all were after it came on the road mix. Oh, the happy time.
I found the scene from 500DOS, it's legit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgVNgYXFi_Q

17/. 'Dreaming Of Another World' - Mystery Jets.
I really love songs that give me advice, and this sone certainly does: "Just try, try to scrape the sky. Only once, once before you die. Do something that would make your mother cry, and dream, dream of another world." I guess it's open to discussion and could be interpreted in various ways. For me, it just tells me to forget everything around me for a while, which I consider reeeeeeeeeally good advice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBRsXKgRAHc

18/. 'If You Wanna' - The Vaccines.
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, I LOVE THE VACCINES. I won't do the big speech again, but I think you get the idea. They're amazing. I urge you to listen to this song, at least.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQKjI6395iU

19/. 'Falling Down' - Scarlett Johansson.
Many of you will not know that Scarlett Johansson is my girl crush, and many of you will also not know that she sings. She did an album of Tom Waits covers and it was truly beautiful. And I'm not just saying that because I love her. I managed to get my hands on that album in March and this was my favourite track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USiLOQFW3X4

20/. 'Yellow Submarine' - The Beatles.
What a terrible song! That's because it's Ringo, y'see, and his MASSIVE JEW NOSE. Basically, I got the album 'Yellow Submarine' in March and it's easily the worst Beatles album so far [I'm collecting them chronologically] I know all the words to it though and it seems to be the first Beatles song that anybody knows, so I guess it's got something about it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xtiu3CA2KUU

And that's it. I hope you liked :]
I didn't have time to draw a picture, am so sorry. I'll just post a picture tomorreh, yeah? :D
BYEEEE. x,.

Sunday 3 April 2011

OH MY GOD, I love The Vaccines.

I've been listening to 'What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?' recently and I've discovered that I have a love for it that I haven't experienced since 'Would It Kill You?' by Hellogoodbye.
The songs are short and snappy, a quality that I appreciate because I have a short attention span and get bored easily; Justin Young's voice is really easy to listen to, as well as sing along with; and it has a simplicity to it that can only suggest that the band really care about what they're doing. Seriously, listen to it now - it's incredible.

In other news, I got my ticket to Reading festival!
Do you know why that's awesome? Because The Vaccines are playing there, WHEY! Not only them, but also The Strokes, Noah & The Whale and Panic! At The Disco. Y'know, I love seeing my 13-year-old self fuse with my current self, to become the super-weemo-indie-music-snob I really am. But anyway, I'll probably mention that more nearer the time.

And a final piece of information, I finished reading the last book in 'The Hunger Games' trilogy yesterday. It's  called 'Mockingjay', and there's a reason why it's not a big deal in Britain: it's a bit shit really. I mean, I read 'The Hunger Games' and really enjoyed it, then I read 'Catching Fire' and it wasn't bad, but then I started reading 'Mockingjay' and could only utter the word 'meh' the whole time. Suzanne Collins isn't a literary genius by any stretch of the imagination, and I found that the plot was what interested me, not the actual book. In all honesty, I could have read the synopsis on wikipedia and got the same thrill out of it. Plus, apparently a film is being made from it, so I can only hope it doesn't pollute our planet like 'Twilight' did. It disgusts me that Earth could literally be in flames and people would still be more interested in discussing Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle. But whatever. Rant over.

I'll post more frequently than I have been recently, I promise.
BYE, GUYS.
